Odaiba is a new seaside city. Japan had a policy of seclusion from the rest of the world, but the U.S. demanded the opening of Japan in the middle of the 19th century, and, all of sudden, the shogunate built artificial islands to set up cannons in order to protect Edo from a possible invasion. People called these cannon batteries “Daiba.” Now, Odaiba is a futuristic city of the 21st century as well as large amusement area. Odaiba has been developed with cutting-edge technology. It has the latest museum of science and “Tokyo Big Sight,” a major complex of exhibition halls. The Fuji Television Network building is one of Odaiba’s most famous. The replica of the Statue of Liberty overlooks the Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo Bay. It is about one –third the size of the Statue of Liberty. The French Statue of Liberty was displayed from April 1998 till May 1999 in commemoration of the “ French Year in Japan.” It became so popular that a replica of the Statue of Liberty was erected at Odaiba. There is an artificial beach in front of the commercial complex “Decks Tokyo.”
